GJW Direct National Champs - Day 2

The ambition was three races back to back to make up for the lost races on Sunday. The weather conditions were F4/F5 with a moderate sea state meaning very lumpy especially downwind! Race 1 started with a gate start. First round was Alan Krailing/Tim Linsell with the pack following. Due to a navigational error they started heading for mark 3 instead of 2 which led to Krailing/Linsell and Nigel Hufton/Will Kennedy having to drop their kites. Remarkably Krailing managed to hold his lead, but whilst rounding mark 2 capised giving the lead to Stephen Videlo/Maddie Harris followed by Steve Hall and Olly Wells. For the next two laps Videlo/Harris maintained their lead with Hall/Wells following, but Stuart Hydon/ Rachel Rhodes managed to move into third past Chris Fish/Beth Condie.

Results - Race 1
1st Stephen Videlo / Maddie Harris
2nd Steve Hall / Olly Wells
3rd Stuart Hydon / Rachel Rhodes
4th Chris Fish / Beth Condie

Race 2 began with the wind increasing. The gate was opened and once again Krailing/Linsell led the pack with Andrew Nunn and Clare Gosling following. Down the first reach it was Krailing leading with kite up but a rudder failure put an end to their race. Videlo/Harris took the advantage with their kite and pulled through to first followed by Fish and Condie with Hydon and Rhodes in third. On the second lap on the downwind mark Fish/Condie were caught out in the big waves whilst trying to multi-task (gybe and drop the kite), which ended in a big capsize. Videlo/Harris and Hydon/Rhodes extended the gap between the rest of the fleet with another comfortable gap between third and the rest of the fleet. With just the final downwind elements of the trapezoid course to do no one went for kites until the dead downwind leg. Hydon/ Rhodes lost stability on this leg and let Hall/Wells through after a windward capsize. They managed to right the boat ahead of Pete Mitchell / Karen Falcon to hold third to the line.
