The Larks returned to Brixham over the weekend of 19/20 May for their last outing before the Nationals at Plymouth.
Race officer Sean Semmens set a long first beat in the shifting Force 3 Southerly wind, so the potential gains and losses were great. Kate Merritt and Karen Jewkes used their knowledge of the bay to good effect, banging right and rounding first, but went low on the reach and got sucked into the fleet. Nigel Hufton and Andy Douglas took a more conservative approach of picking their way up the middle of the beats to eventually take the lead, followed by Emma Harris/Millie Parsons. Newcomer to the fleet, 800 sailor Toby Wincer took third, crewed by Ali Dart.
In race 2, twice champion Dougal Scott and wife Helen took the bullet, pursued by Hufton/Douglas and Charlie Roome/David Marlow. The last race of Saturday again saw Hufton/Douglas take the bullet, this time followed by an ever improving Chris Holiman and Kate Hutchins, then new pairing Steve Cumley and Lucy Evans.
Sunday dawned misty, with a cold Northerly Force 3 and bigger waves. Hufton and Douglas shook off their hangovers and revelled in the conditions, winning both races 4 and 5 by a good margin, followed by Harris/ Parsons and Tim Pearce/Harri Condie as runners-up, respectively.
With Hufton/Douglas having won the event with a race to spare, Douglas swapped places Marlow. Wincer and Dart won their first Lark Open meeting race together, with Room/Douglas getting into the groove quickly to take second – so Douglas actually finished the weekend with better results than Hufton!
