West Kirby Open Meeting Report
A sunny weekend greeted the Larks at West Kirby on 4/5 September, but the wind teased the fleet as the sea breeze struggled to make it's impact. Out on the estuary, Race 1 got away with Mark Ampleford/Lee Nankervis judging the tide perfectly to lay the windward mark to leeward of the rest of the fleet who had overestimated the tide's strength. Although Emma Harris and Becky Priest tried hard to pass them, it proved impossible and Ampleford/Nankervis took the race.
Race 2 started in a slight and fickle wind, the first leg quickly turning into a fetch. Harris/Priest rounded in the lead and hoisted the kite and gybed to the wing mark, only to have to drop again as the wind filled in from ahead. Other than Harris/Priest, who kept the lead, the rest of the fleet turned inside out and it was Chris and Ann Biglin who took the advantage to finish in 2nd with Stuart Morris in 3rd.
The wind increased to an occasional F3 for Race 3 with a chop developing across the course. Harris/Priest again rounded first, closely followed by Ampleford/Nankervis. These two swapped places twice on the first reach before Harris/Priest settled into the lead and eventually won by several minutes from Smashie Bennett and Tim and Tim Lawrence/Christine Elles-Toner.
WKSC hosted a tasty BBQ in the warm setting sun on Saturday night, but Sunday morning dawned grey and breathless. After a postponement, PRO Chris Kameen, finally sent the fleet out onto the marine lake as a zephyr of breeze filled in. Two races were sailed with many place changes in very light and fickle conditions. The eventual 1-2-3 was the same in both races, with locals Mike Hartley and Will Shepherd showing the fleet how to do it in no wind, Harris/Priest in 2nd and Ampleford/Nankervis in 3rd.
A massive thank you goes out to West Kirby, who provided the usual warm welcome and excellent hospitality visitors have come to expect.
