Horning Open Meeting Report
A small Lark fleet travelled into deepest Norfolk for the first Horning Lark Open Meeting. The fleet was greeted with sunny skies and a very friendly welcome.
Despite a lack of wind the Larks took to the water. After a tow down the river to Horning Little Broad they were greeted by a small but idyllic stretch of water. Two races were held in very shifty conditions. Matt Stern & Antonia Steer won both races from Geoff Sinton & Kathy Bartlett but in both races it was close with the local Baker Lark of Liz & Phil Ollier giving the visitors a run for their money.
The wind improved very slightly on the Sunday as did the turnout with Simon Cox & Edd McArdle and Matt Ellis & Richard Fletcher adding to the competition. Due to the previous days results Matt & Antonia only had to win one race to guarantee the open meeting victory.
At the start of race three it looked as if Matt & Antonia had it all to do as they trailed in last place around the first mark with Geoff & Kathy and Simon & Edd tussling for the lead in the patchy conditions. Being behind played into Matt & Antonia’s hands as they were the first to spot and catch a zephyr and take an unassailable lead giving them the open meeting win.
Knowing that the best they could do was second overall Simon & Edd started to get to grips with the shifty conditions. Despite strong challenges by the others, in particular locals Matt & Richard who were proving very competitive, they held it together to win the final two races and take second overall. Third place overall was taken by Geoff & Kathy who seem to be getting their Rondar Lark up to speed in the trying conditions.
The Larks would like to thank Horning Sailing Club for hosting the latest event in the Lark Belle Isle Circuit and look forward to another visit in future.
Next up on the Lark circuit is the Final Fling at Mayflower SC. This event not only provides some of the best sailing of the year but also one of the best socials. We look forward to seeing you there.
