Medway Open Meeting Report

The Medway Y.C once again laid on a brilliant weekend for the latest event in the Lark Gill Belle Isle traveller series. The racing was held down river in the shadow of the controversial Kingsnorth power station, the scene of much drama the previous weekend when climate change protesters were rescued from their sinking raft. Fortunately there were no sinkingís this weekend, although the fleet did provide some momentary wobbles and the occasion capsize on some screaming downwind legs.

Saturday saw 2 challenging races sailed in a southerly Force 4. The first race was won by Alan Krailing & Edd McArdle with Harry Pynn and & Helen Krailing 2nd and Nigel Scott & Joe Hunt in 3rd. Despite a big broach and a close shave with a sunken barge, Alan & Edd repeated their win in Race 2 with Harry & Helen and Nigel & Joe again in 2nd and 3rd.

On Saturday evening the Club provided a massive hog roast and a quiz organised by Holly Hewett. Donít expect to see any lark sailors appearing on Mastermind though, the quiz was won comfortably by the Race Management Team.

Sunday provided similar conditions which produced some incredibly close racing, Harry & Helen used their fantastic downwind speed to win race 3 from Alan & Edd who were just ahead of James Ward & Simon Heighton and Holly Hewett and Ally Dart who both put in a storming last beat to finish within seconds of each other for 3rd and 4th.

Race 4 a saw another battle between Harry & Helen and Alan & Edd with Alan and Edd breaking away late on to take 1st and the event whist Harry & Helen Held off the challenge of Nigel & Joe for 2nd.

Race 5, culminated in an exhausting beat against the tide all the way home but for many of the fleet was probably most memorable for a close shave with a fast moving freight ship. James & Simon rounded off a good day with a 2nd behind Alan & Edd, whilst Nigel and Joe collected another 3rd and with it the Silver Fleet. Bronze fleet honours went to John Crooks & Kirsty Phipps.
