The Larks met with some fantastic sailing and a very warm welcome on their first visit to Medway Y.C, so much so that most are already planning for another visit next year.
2 races were sailed on Saturdays in a gusty force 4, which built steadily towards 6 as the day went on. A screaming three sail reach, which must have been all of 2 miles long, was the definite highlight from race 1. Navigational problems cost Matt White & Harriet Steer their early lead, which was taken on by both Simon Cox & Amy Finney and Smashie Bennett & Rachel Rhodes. Alan Krailing & Edd McArdle eventually came through late on to nick the win from Simon/Amy with Smashie & Rachel OCS giving 3rd to Matt/Harriet.
By the start of the 2nd race it was absolutely howling and a beat with the tide meant there was again plenty of downwind sailing and some spectacular capsizing. A fantastic 4 way battle developed at the front until capsizes from Matt/Harriet then Smashie/Rachel left it a head to head between Harry Pynn & Will Branton and Alan/Edd. Harry/Will got to within a whisker up the final beat but couldn’t get past Alan/Edd, and with Smashie/Rachel stuck fast in the Medway Mud, Matt/Harriet came through for 3rd.
Sunday was a total contrast, the larks launched with the Medway looking like a mill pool. Fortunately it didn’t last and as race 3 went on the wind built steadily. Again navigation problems cost the early leader, this time Dan Watson and Harriet Condie, with local pairing Holly Hewat & Ally Dart taking on the challenge of showing everyone else the way round to take a fantastic 1st from David and Nick Marlow.
Harry/Will disappeared into a big lead in race 4, it was much closer for 2nd with Alan/Edd eventually coming through from Matt/Harriet.
A long run against a building tide lead to some adventures onto the Medway’s Sticky mud for some, newly crowned chairman and early leader Simon Cox the worst affected. Dedication paid off for Chris Whitehouse sailing with Sophie Macley who made the long trip down from the Merlin Nationals in Pwllheli on Saturday to race on Sunday and take the last race from Alan/Edd, Matt/Harriet and Fiona Gray & Helen Windward posting a fantastic fourth.
Overall there were great results for Bronze fleet sailors with Holly and Ally in 4th and Fiona and Helen 5th. Both ahead of the Silver fleet winners Stuart and Julia Allen in 6th not to mention several gold fleeters. In front of these 3 were Harry & Will in 3rd, Matt & Harriet 2nd with Alan & Edd taking the event.
