Royal Harwich Open Meeting Report

Sun, Thunderstorms, Croquet, Sumo Wrestling, National 12’s, Firefly’s, the imagination of Race Officer Graham Ireland and a tricky southerly breeze all combined to produce a great open meeting for the Larks at Royal Harwich YC.

A ‘P’, ‘E’ and complex trapezoid course kept the sailors on their toes for the three races held over the high tide on Saturday. The variability of the wind and the variety of the courses were reflected in the results with three different race winners. Chris Whitehouse & Ruth Johnson stormed into a big lead to take race 1 and with a consistent series, including a third in race 5, Chris & Ruth took silver fleet honours by some distance. Steve Dunn & Toby Lewis won race 2 after a close race with Jon Lewis & Tessa Nicholls who took second. Jon & Tessa looked all set to go one better in race 3 but overcame the torrential rain and thunderstorm only to fall foul of the shifting breeze, dropping three places in the last few yards. This allowed Chris Fish & Beth Condie to claim the spoils from Alan Krailing & Edd McArdle in 2nd, who with a 2nd and 3rd from race one and two lead after day one.

Matt White & Harriet Steer were the stars of the show on Sunday with two race wins, but a 2nd in race 5 was just enough for Alan and Edd to hold off their late charge for overall honours, with Jon & Tessa in third overall. A 2nd for Matt Stern & Adam Owens in race 4 helped to secure second place in the silver fleet, with Steve Chatten & Kirsty Phipps showing some great speed for third. Holly Hewat & Ally Dart once again claimed victory in the Bronze fleet, with Jane Alexander & Rachel Rhodes second and Nigel & Fiona Denchfield third.
