Frensham Five 2006 - Races 3 & 4
Grey skies, rain and a good breeze from the North-East greeted the competitors for the second weekend of the Frensham Five series.
After missing the first weekend, Lark National Champions, Sarah Richards and Nigel Wakefield came out of their winter hibernation to demostrate how rusty they are.
Race 3 was sailed with the Fast Handicap fleet. A badly misjudged start by Simon and Nikki resulted in penalty turns and having to play catch up. Sarah and Nigel led to the first mark followed by Simon and Nikki who had pulled through the fleet to be second Lark from Phil and Linda Whitney. Despite getting within striking distance Simon and Nikki could not quite get close enough to Sarah and Nigel to pile on any pressure.
Race 4. The ENE wind is a good direction for Frensham and the force 3 ensured a little excitement. Chris having now got out of bed joined the fleet for race 4 and spent the first two rounds changing places with Sarah and Nigel, before Sarah picked the right shift on a short beat to pull away enough not to be threatened to the finish. Today’s top tip from Nigel, "When you unfurl the jib between races make sure the spinnaker halyard still runs free!". Simon and Phil with Sandy and Pat close behind, spent the first round quite close to each other. Simon and Nikki then pulled away to finish a comfortable third.
There is still plenty of time to qualify for the Frensham Five series with 5 races needed to count and 6 races left. The next race day is next weekend, Sunday 26th February.
Frensham Pond is the perfect venue to hone your boat handling skills for the coming season. Come along next weekend to see what you’re missing out on first hand. All the dates of the F5 series can be found on the fixtures pages of this website.
