Clear blue skies, a stiff breeze and a sharp frost greeted the visitors to Northampton Sailing Club's Steve Nicholson Trophy in aid of Asthma UK.
8 Lark's raced in the Doublehanded fleet consisting of many Merlin’s, 12's and Fireballs.
After the Champagne launch of Lark 2500, Simon Cox & Tessa Nicholls overhauled Jon Lewis & Lucy Matthews and Dougal Scott & David Marlow on the first beat of Race 1. Jon & Lucy pulled back some of the deficit and briefly took the lead of the Lark's but Simon & Tessa, getting the lay line right established the lead by the windward mark. Meanwhile, Jon Fish & Toby Lewis who started over a minute late appeared from nowhere to snap at the leading Lark's heels. Unfortunately, the Fish/Lewis jinx struck again causing their boom to snap! Simon & Tessa held off the late challenge of Jon & Lucy to give 2500 a maiden race victory!
After lunch the breeze increased further providing some very exciting reaches. The conditions were becoming punishing, especially for the new teams, with plenty of capsizes. First to falter were Simon & Tessa to give 2500 a proper christening (twice was overdoing it)! Harry & Milly were spotted swimming on the second reach, Jon & Lucy had an embarrassing upwind capsize and most of the other Lark's capsized at some point. At the end Jon & Toby took the gun for the Lark's, followed by Dougal & David and Jon & Lucy.
Despite the cold we all had a great day, certainly blowing away the winter cobwebs. Bring on spring!
