Lark Inland Championship Report

LARK INLAND CHAMPIONSHIP 2005

34 Larks arrived at a rain-soaked Burghfield S.C. over the weekend of 21/22May.

The rain cleared in time for the 1st Race with defending champion, Emma Harris, sailing with Edd McArdle, hot off the blocks for the race win with inland specialist Bob and Kelsey Suggitt 2nd and speed demons of 2005, Steve
Cumley and Eluned Jones third.

Race 2 started, after a torrential downpour, with Suggitt going one better to win chased hard by Dougal Scott/David Marlow for 2nd. Jon Lewis and Milly Parsons reversed the results in Race 1 to beat Cumley/Jones into 4th
for 3rd.

A lunch break ensued which allowed the rain to die and the wind to build to F4 gusting to F5, not easy in the shifty conditions.

Suggitt had it in the bag until a capsize let Alan Krailing/Helen Hunt to steal the win from Harris/McArdle and another strong result from Scott/Marlow in 3rd.

A battle hardened fleet stayed out to complete the 4th race of the day. Lewis/Parsons came back from a DNF to take a comfortable win with Cumley/Jones ending the day with a satisfying 2nd. Newcomers, Tom & Jo Hewitson, showed the fleet their potential by coming in 3rd.

With 4 out of the 6 races out of the way, the top 4 were separated by just 2 points and attentions turned to the cheesy disco and bar, for the evenings entertainment, with the Lark sailors living up to their reputation as bad
dancers but great drinkers.

Sunday dawned sunny and dry with a favourable Force 3, with a 10am start time, the hangovers had to be forgotten, a quick breakfast taken and those tents still standing to be left to dry out.

Chris Fish/Beth Condie showed awesome boat speed to pull through the fleet and win. Lewis/Parsons crossed the line for the 2nd just 3 inches in front of Scott/Marlow.

This left a 3 way fight for the title with Lewis/Parsons in the pound seats.

Suggitt showed his determination off the line to lead with Lewis snapping at his heels. Suggitt shook off Lewis to take the win and wait to see if Lewis could hold 3rd. Around the last mark Krailing and Cumley had put themselves 2nd and 3rd and Lewis was left with it all to do. With good boat speed he
sneaked ahead of Cumley to take 3rd and the title by just 1 point.

Thanks must go to Burghfield S.C. for their hospitality and slick organisation, Speed Sails and Muc-Off for their sponsorship and the Lark Class Association for their support.
