Coast Graphic Lark Nationals Plymouth - Day 4

As we entered into the final day of the 2012 Lark National Championship it was still wide open. The force 5 breeze meant that the conditions would suit those with heavier crew weights and those with expert boat handling skills in both wind and heavy seas.

Race 8 started (first race of the day) and it was James Stewart and Tim Hartley looking strong with the Videlo’s also looking good. The boats going right seem to be on the inside of the wind lift, but towards the top of the beat the wind backed those on the earlier gain which allowed those on the left to come back in at the end of the beat. Amidst the tricky conditions many opted against kites on the next leg as it was quite tight given the gusty conditions. By lap 2 the wind direction was settling in and James Stewart/Tim Harley were looking very comfortable with the conditions. Not far behind, it was Steve and Chris Videlo followed by Charlie Roome/David Marlow. The other key contender for the Championship was Steve Hall/Si Haighton, who only managed a 6th position.

Onto the final race it was Stewart/Hartley looking odds on for the title, but their job wasn’t yet done. By the time the next race started it was Hall/Haighton that opened a good lead with Pynn/Linsell ready to capitalise if the leaders made a mistake. Will Croxford/Chris Warburton held a competent third whilst Stewart/Hartley could only muster a fourth. With the wind changing the race officer was substituting marks of the course which made navigation difficult. By the end of the race it was Hall/Haighton who secured first place. With this win they also claimed the Lark National Championship, but by the narrowest of margins 0.5 of a point.

Well done to Steve and Si who were last year’s runner-up, but also to James and Tim who pushed them so hard.

Thanks also go to the fleets sponsor Coast Graphics and RPCYC who were fantastic hosts.
